Reflecting on that movie a quarter-century later, Holmes says she can see how that formative experience with Lee shaped her own creative evolution into a filmmaker. But as it turns out, this isn’t the first time Suri has contributed to one of her mom's projects. For her part, Suri has largely stayed out of the public spotlight since entering her teenage years. "Alone Together" isn't the first film in which Suri has showcased her voice. Holmes said that her daughter also sang in the film "Rare Objects," a period drama based on the novel by author Kathleen Tessaro, which Holmes also directed. It follows a man and woman fleeing New York City during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020.

I ran into Katie Holmes last night at Newel Antiques on East 61st St. where a little reception was thrown for “Rare Objects” by owner Jake Baer. It’s the most charming antiques store in New York, and they were happy to identify with cards all their rare objects that were used in the film. The great set decorator Beth Kushnick invited me, along with Jill Brooke (flowerpowerdaily.com) so we could see where she gets her amazing ideas. I didn’t realize until I got there that Katie would be there, too, along with some of the cast and production people.

Alone Together was in part inspired the 1987 comedy Baby Boom, which starred Diane Keaton. “Diane met my daughter when she was a year old," Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment of Keaton, who sang “Blue Moon” in the 2014 Rob Reiner film And So It Goes. Explaining her decision to include Suri—who she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise—in the project, Katie told Yahoo! Entertainment, "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her."

"She actually did sing in Rare Objects, which is the film we did last fall," the director says of her recently completed third feature, a period drama based on the 2016 bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro.
